Cabo--Then and Now

  • Posted on

When you think of vacationing in Mexico many people think of fancy resorts on the beach.  Cabo has a plethora.  Hotels, timeshares, and condos line the coastline from Cabo Pulmo to San Jose del Cabo to the corridor all the way to Cabo around lands end to the Pacific where they continue north up to Pescadero and Todo Santos.  The room counts are tripling over the next two years with new high-end names being added to our skyline and beachfront.  In 2012 1.3 million people traveled to Cabo San Lucas; last year in 2016 over 4 million people chose to travel to Cabo for vacation.  Why is Cabo having such a boom?  Cabo, just 40 years ago, was a quaint fishing village until the movie stars of Hollywood found us and decided it would be a good escape.  Up with the hotels and golf courses which changed this quiet little fishing community built around a cannery to a booming vacation destination.  You of course do not have to be a celebrity to visit Cabo there is just a chance you might see them.  The quaint town offers anonminity to the celebrities with its small town feel while giving all of his guests a down home quality with the friendlly open personality of its people.  Cabo offers everyone something to do. Of course fishing and golfing, but also beaches, whale watching, shopping, restaurants and most importantly a place to relax.

It is amazing how in such a short period of time the amount how much changes has occured in this town with only more growth to come.  The opening picture is of Squid Roe which is in the center of the town--that was taken in 1989.  Barely over 30 years ago.

Now Cabo has 15 top 100 ranked golf courses, over 15,000 available rooms, a population of over 238,000 and over 4 million vacationers per year.
